The first few months with your newborn baby can be quite exciting and overwhelming in equal measure, especially for first-time parents. First-time parents often seek advice from others about newborn baby care, which is not a bad thing to do; however, contradicting suggestions can leave them perplexed. Being with your newborn can be both exciting and overwhelming, but keeping these simple tips in mind can help you feel more prepared.
1. Feed the Baby on Time
Newborns are generally recommended to be exclusively breastfed for the first six months, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare professional. Breast milk provides essential nutrients for an infant. Newborns usually need to be fed frequently, including every 2–3 hours, although feeding patterns may vary from baby to baby. If breastfeeding is not possible or your baby needs additional feeding, consult your healthcare professional about an appropriate infant formula and feeding plan.
2. Hold Your Newborn Properly
It is important for first-time parents to know how to hold an infant properly. At this stage, the neck muscles are not yet strong enough to support the head independently. To help keep your baby comfortable and safe, support the head and neck whenever you lift, carry or hold your newborn.
3. Take Care of the Umbilical Cord Stump
Taking care of your baby’s umbilical cord stump is important during the first few weeks. Follow your healthcare professional’s instructions for keeping the area clean and dry. A sponge bath can be given until the umbilical cord stump falls off and the area heals. Wash your hands before handling the area, and avoid applying products unless advised by your healthcare professional. If you notice signs of infection, such as redness around the area, swelling, pus or unusual discharge, contact your doctor promptly.
4. Change Diapers Frequently
Newborns need frequent feeding and regular diaper changes. After the first few days of life, a baby who is feeding adequately will generally have around six or more wet diapers per day. The number of diaper changes can vary, and you may need to change your baby’s diaper several times throughout the day. Keep clean diapers, gentle wipes or a soft cloth, and diaper rash cream recommended for your baby handy.
5. Massaging
Gentle massage can be a soothing way to interact with your baby and build a bond. Use gentle movements and stop if your baby appears uncomfortable. If you have questions about massage techniques or your baby’s individual needs, ask your healthcare professional for guidance.
Apart from the tips mentioned above, it is important to take your baby for vaccinations according to the recommended schedule. Whether your baby was born following IVF treatment or through vaginal or caesarean delivery, follow the vaccination schedule advised by your healthcare professional and attend routine newborn check-ups.
